Park Overview

Mount Elgon National Park is a spectacular volcanic ecosystem shared between Uganda and Kenya. Travelers can climb and traverse the majestic mountain known locally as Masaba, named after the ancestral spirit of the Bagisu people. The mountain boasts one of the world's largest calderas, ancient lava terraces, stunning cliffs, dense montane forests, bamboo belts, and unique high-altitude vegetation like giant lobelias and the endemic Elgon groundsel.

Wildlife encounters are just as fascinating—this is the home of the famous salt-mining elephants that wander into caves at night to chip minerals from the rock walls. Other unique species include blue monkeys, black-and-white colobus, hyraxes, bushbucks, forest hogs, and over 300 bird species.
