Mount Elgon National Park

Journey to the mystical and mountainous beauty of eastern Uganda, filled with rich culture, towering peaks, unique wildlife, and breathtaking vegetation.

Park Overview

Mount Elgon National Park is a spectacular volcanic ecosystem shared between Uganda and Kenya. Travelers can climb and traverse the majestic mountain known locally as Masaba, named after the ancestral spirit of the Bagisu people. The mountain boasts one of the world's largest calderas, ancient lava terraces, stunning cliffs, dense montane forests, bamboo belts, and unique high-altitude vegetation like giant lobelias and the endemic Elgon groundsel.

Wildlife encounters are just as fascinating—this is the home of the famous salt-mining elephants that wander into caves at night to chip minerals from the rock walls. Other unique species include blue monkeys, black-and-white colobus, hyraxes, bushbucks, forest hogs, and over 300 bird species.

Mount Elgon

Mount Elgon (Masaba)

Called Masaba by the Bagisu people, Mount Elgon is a massive extinct volcano that straddles Uganda and Kenya. It has a gigantic 8 km-wide caldera, the largest volcanic base in the world, and a peak elevation of 4,321 meters (Wagagai). Bagisu folklore says the mountain is the home of the ancestral spirit Masaba, and many cultural practices—including the famous Imbalu circumcision rituals—are tied to it.
